Born Nguyen Xuan Bao, Thich Nhat Hanh became a novice monk at the age of 16 and later was ordained as a fully fledged monk in the Vietnamese Zen tradition.
Thich Nhat Hanh played a crucial role in promoting mindfulness as a means of achieving inner peace and fostering social change. He was a proponent of "Engaged Buddhism," which encouraged the application of Buddhist principles to address social, political, and environmental issues.
During the Vietnam War, Thich Nhat Hanh advocated for peace and reconciliation, both within Vietnam and globally. He founded the School of Youth Social Service, a grassroots relief organization, and worked towards reconciliation between North and South Vietnam.
